Neuromuscular & TMJ Treatment
What is Neuromuscular Dentistry / TMJ / TMD?
What is Neuromuscular Dentistry / TMJ / TMD?
Neuromuscular dentistry considers the nerves, muscles and the correct positioning of the jaw. Your teeth, joints, muscles and nerves all work together in the proper alignment and functioning of the jaw. When any part of this equation is overlooked painful conditions such as TMJ disorders and serious dental problems can develop.
TMJ / TMD
The most life-changing effect of neuromuscular dentistry is its ability to prevent, diagnose and treat TMJ/TMD (TM Joint syndrome / Disorder). TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, or jaw joint, one of which is located on each side of the head.
TMJ/TMD symptoms include:
- Headaches (often misdiagnosed as migraines)
- Shoulder, neck or back pain
- Numbness in arms and fingers
- Facial pain
- Jaw pain
- Clicking or popping jaw
- Clenching or grinding teeth
- Ringing ears (tinnitus)
- Congested ears
How will Dr. Moore help you?
Dr Moore will treat your individual case in a series of steps as follows:
First appointment
The first appointment is a detailed consultation where Dr. Moore will evaluate your muscles, teeth and joints. He will do this by examining your muscles, evaluating your teeth and observing the movement of your joints. This appointment takes 30 - 45 minutes and you can currently avail yourself of this initial appointment free of charge.
Second appointment
If it is found that you indeed need neuromuscular therapy then a second appointment will be made.
During this appointment, Dr. Moore will establish your muscles' electrical activity. This is accomplished by utilizing a device called the K-7 computer. This computer creates a chart of your muscles by looking at the firing pattern. Dr. Moore then finds the ideal position of your muscles and will create an orthotic to hold you at this position.
Dr. Moore has found that 90% of all migraines are due to muscles being overstimulated. By finding the ideal position he has seen almost all patients' migraines disappear.
This second appointment generally takes 2-3 hours.
Third appointment
Your orthotic has been custom-made at the lab (this takes approximately 3 weeks) and Dr. Moore will now deliver this removable orthotic during your third appointment. This takes about 30 minutes.
You then wear the orthotic for 2 -3 months, coming in for follow-up appointments about once a month.
Dr. Moore has taken about 300 hours of continuing education spanning 3 years in order to learn the art of treating the joints. He has been practicing neuromuscular dentistry for 5 years and has achieved successful results on numerous cases.

Testimonials
Below are just a few examples of the many patients Dr. Moore has successfully treated using Neuromuscular Dentistry:
"My jaw no longer pops, there is no pain in my face from TMJ, and I have the confidence to smile widely - and frequently. And you can't put a price on that."
"When I hear people say when they have a dentist appointment coming up, the next thing out of their mouth usually is "I hate to go to the dentist". Then I smile. And then I tell them, you should go to MY dentist.
"I have been going to Dr. Moore since he first began practicing in this area. I soon realized he was a kind, quiet and gentle person, exactly the type of personality you want when choosing a dentist. His staff of dental hygienists never caused any pain during teeth cleanings. Dr. Moore actually gave me the first shot I had ever had in my mouth for a cavity filling, and while I must have left a dent in the arm of his chair from clenching so hard, seeing what looked like a six inch long needle coming at me, the shot actually didn't hurt at all. Dr. Moore just has a way of being gentle, calm and reassuring. So, I found myself actually looking forward to going to the dentist. I soon began to think of him, and all of his staff really, as more of a friend, maybe even more as family, than as a doctor's office.
"Long before starting to go to Dr Moore's office, I had been grinding away my teeth, and over the years it was bbecoming worse. My jaw would pop, sometimes loudly, if I ever opened my mouth wide, and my jaw would hurt occasionally from the TMJ. Dr. Moore began to point out what was happening, and that while it was not absolutely necessary to fix, it was only going to get worse. And as it had gotten worse, I was becoming embarrassed to open my mouth, and was certainly self conscious of my teeth. But, I of course, put it off. Then during one visit, Dr Moore took some impressions and made a model of how it was, and how it should be. I was shocked. I needed a full mouth restoration, to add the length back to my teeth that I had ground away. This meant every tooth was going to be radically changed. I also had to have mouth surgery with Dr Richard Ellis, who I also highly recommend, to remove bony tori [bone outgrowth] that had grown in my mouth over the years. It was to be a long, arduous, and yes even expensive process. But there was never any pressure from Dr. Moore. He simply explained how it was - and how it would be - both with and without having the procedure. Dr. Moore's calm demeanor and reassuring attitude had given me the confidence to proceed with the restoration, but there was the cost factor. The deciding factor was a statement that my hygienist, Lisa Gottfried, made to me one day during a visit. "Neal, isn't your smile, and your self confidence…worth a car payment?" That's what did it. Dr Moore's office was able to arrange financing options that helped with the pain of the expense, and Dr. Moore abilities as a skilled dentist, helped with the pain of the procedure. Even though every tooth in my head had to be ground away, and caps and veneers installed, sitting in the chair that long with your mouth wide open was more painful that anything about the restoration. I can truthfully say that I was never in any pain at any point. Sure, it was uncomfortable, but there was never any pain."

Neal had worn down his teeth to the point that he lost quite a substantial amount of vertical height. This was the reason you could not see his teeth when he smiled in his "before" picture. The results took about 15 years off his looks and created an instant face-lift.
"The results were life changing, dramatic, and yet at the same time, subtle. Dr. Moore advised against getting "bright white" veneers, but rather to choose a warm color that would appear much more natural. People began to come up to me and say, "what is different about you?", "you have a nice smile" and "nice teeth". My jaw no longer pops, there is no pain in my face from TMJ, and I have the confidence to smile widely - and frequently. And you can't put a price on that."

"I can not thank you enough for all that you have done for me."
"I am writing to express my gratitude to you in helping to relieve the problems I was suffering from. I had been to my family doctor who told me that my symptoms were temporary; when they did not go away I went to see my ENT. Under his care I had several tests run and was diagnosed with Mineres Disease. After telling a friend about this she introduced me to you. This was truly an act of God. I don't know how long I have stood to be dizzy and nauseous on a daily basis. I had several symptoms including: dizziness, nausea, ringing in the ear, jaw popping and migraines. Through treatment with you these symptoms have disappeared and/or lessened. Undergoing several sessions with the machine you used to relax my jaw muscles - so that you could take impressions and make a mouthpiece - was the start of the road to recovery.
"Once I was able to wear the mouthpiece I realized that my jaw seemed to be less tense and the noise I was experiencing in my ear had ceased altogether. I have been into the office for several adjustments to the mouthpiece and I can tell a change has taken place with my bite. My headaches have been few and far between since I began wearing the mouthpiece.
"I am looking forward to the next step in my treatment. I can not thank you enough for all that you have done for me."

"Even though I had been diagnosed with TMJ several years ago, I had not been successful in finding anyone to treat the condition."
"Dear Dr. Moore,
"What a difference you have made in my life! Even though I had been diagnosed with TMJ several years ago, I had not been successful in finding anyone to treat the condition. This last year, my life revolved around migraines (5-6 times a week), constant right ear pain and locking jaws. I was taking an average of 12 imitrexes a week to maintain some quality of life. Needless to say, I had more bad days than good. I could not remember a day without pain.
"We started this incredible journey in January and now I am pain free and have very limited jaw popping. It is unbelievable how much YOU and the appliance have changed my life. I am free of pain medication and do not worry whether I will be able to attend an activity. I realize we still have some work to do, but truly believe in you and your practice.
"Your staff is so friendly and caring. They have always been there helping with working around my schedule.
"Little did I know, when our paths crossed on a practice ball field, you would be an answer to a prayer that had been prayed so long. One never knows when or where their prayers will be answered!! But I will always know and be grateful that you were sent to answer my prayer. My family is blessed for knowing you and your family."
